In October, construction of the Crystal Solar Park Lommel will start. 300,000 solar panels will be installed on a surface area equivalent to 200 football fields. These will generate electricity from next year to zinc company Nyrstar and the companies in the new business park. 30 companies from all over Europe were candidates to build what will be the largest solar park in the Benelux, with a capacity of 99 MWP. We are proud that the choice ultimately fell on ENGIE Fabricom. The mega-solar park is an initiative of the Limburg investment company LRM, the City of Lommel, and Nyrstar.
20 years of experience
“The bids we received were impressive in terms of content and pricing,” says Stijn Bijnens, CEO of investment company LRM. “Thanks to the competitive tendering, we managed to secure the construction and maintenance of the solar park at a considerably lower cost than expected.” ENGIE Fabricom won the tender, which delighted General Manager Mark Dirckx. “As a Belgian industrial company with more than 20 years’ experience in building solar parks, ENGIE Fabricom is perfectly placed to successfully install these panels and build a direct connection to Nyrstar’s network. This is a very exciting project, so we appreciate the trust placed in our expertise.”
2,200 km of cable
The contracts with Nyrstar Belgium have also since been signed. When the project first goes online, the zinc processing company will consume all the electricity generated via a direct connection to the solar park. Companies that later move to the Kristalpark III business park will also be able to apply for a connection to the solar park. Work started on 1 October 2018, and is planned to take 9 months, so the park will be generating electricity from summer 2019. One interesting detail: by that time, we will have installed no less than 2,200 km of cable on the site!
